Chippewa National Forest

Edge of the Wilderness National Scenic Byway

Awarded the status of National Scenic Byway in 1996, the 47-mile winding drive from Grand Rapids north to Effie on State Highway 38 shows off spectacular scenery and historic sites. Hill Annex Mine State Park

A trip to Hill Annex Mine State Park is more than just a "day in the park," it is a voyage in time. Let our professional Mine Interpreters take you down into the heart of what was once Minnesota's sixth largest ore producing mine. Mining began here nearly 100 years ago and continued until 1978, but the landscape left by the years of exploration is ever changing and timeless.

Wildlife enthusiast can view a large variety of birds and mammals which abound near the open-pit lakes that are part of the areas rich history. Hodgins-Berardo Arena

Located in Coleraine and operated by the Greenway Joint Recreation Association, the Hodgins-Berardo Arena is a historical icon that houses unforgettable memories of hockey yesteryear while serving today’s recreational needs of the Greenway School District and its residents. The arena hosts: youth and high school baseball, basketball, wrestling, volleyball, pony football, figure skating, the summer hockey program, circuses, garage sales, Greenway’s prom, and other special events.

Itasca Gun Club

If you are interested in any aspect of shooting sports then you have to check out the Itasca Gun Club just a couple miles north of Grand Rapids, Minnesota. The Itasca Gun Club offers indoor and outdoor venues for pistol and rifle. As a member-operated club, the Itasca Gun Club offers educational and recreational opportunities for a wide variety of participants on a membership basis. Whether you are a first-time shooter interested in becoming firearms certified or you are training for the next Olympic games, the Itasca Gun Club has a program to meet your needs and exceed your expectations.

We have active Bullseye (Conventional) Pistol, IDPA, Smallbore and Highpower Rifle Groups. The outdoor ranges are available to all club members year-round and the indoor range is available for scheduled events like matches, leagues and fundraisers. Come and see why over 500 members call the Itasca Gun Club their home away from home. Located at the Intersection of CR 61 and CR 325.

Mesabi Trail

Located in northern Minnesota between the cities of Ely and Grand Rapids, the Mesabi Trail is a premier Minnesota bike trail winding through some of the state's prettiest regions. When completed, the trail will traverse 132 miles and connect more than 25 communities. This superior paved bike trail is well- mapped, well-maintained and the Mesabi Trail also makes an interesting walking path. In 2008, approximately 97 miles of trail will be complete and offer convenient accessibility at numerous entry points.

The longest paved section connects Marble to McKinley (approximately 60 miles through the communities of Nashwauk, Keewatin, Hibbing, Chisholm, Mt. Iron and Virginia to name a few). An additional section approximately 13 miles in length connects Grand Rapids to Scenic Hwy 7. Construction will begin on the link between Scenic Highway 7 and Marble this spring.

Mt. Itasca Winter Sports Center

With hills and trails available for recreational and competitive use year-round, Mt. Itasca is a community asset that is home to snow-sports athletes and enthusiasts of every age.

Mt. Itasca is one of the only facilities in the country that maintains venues for downhill, snowboard, biathlon, cross-country, ski jumping and Nordic-combined all at a single site. At the heart of the facility is the Itasca Ski & Outing Club, which is proud of supporting ski jumping in the area for more than a century. The center also boasts a world-class biathlon course that is home to the U.S. Junior Biathlon Team, as well as miles of trails available for recreational and competitive cross-country skiers, hikers and runners. The area's downhill runs have recently been enhanced to include the Area 51 snowboard terrain, with jumps, rails and other topographical essentials to that sport.

Nordic Ridge Gardens

A 160 acre former dairy farm located on a picturesque hilltop, south of the town of Calumet, MN on the west end of the Mesabi Iron Range. Approximately 15 miles east of Grand Rapids and 22 miles west of Hibbing. Their warm, sunny hilltop combined with sandy loam soil produces a bountiful crop of juicy red strawberries each summer from mid June to mid July. Each fall the farm is host to thousands of visitors who come to visit farm animals, marvel at the abundant fall offerings (thousands of pumpkins, squash and gourds) and enjoy the family fun offered at their Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze. You're bound to leave with a smile and a renewed appreciation for life's simple pleasures.

Swan Lake Country Club

Located just off of Highway 169 in Pengilly, Swan Lake Country Club plays like a 9-hole private course, but has been generously open to the public since 1929. This seasoned and immaculately cared for course offers over 3,200 yards of play from the longest tee boxes plus the modern amenities of a restaurant, bar and 12- tee driving range. The par 36 course will challenge every skill level and the characteristic northwoods scenery will never disappoint.
