The Greenway Community

Northern Minnesota's Greenway region consists of several communities within a 185 square mile area. Greenway offers plentiful opportunities for recreation, education, lodging, healthcare, shopping, and dining. Greenway is an ideal destination for your next vacation or as a new home!

The communities that make up the Greenway area are: LaPrairie, Coleraine, Bovey, Taconite, Marble, Calumet, Pengilly, and Cloverdale. There are also several Townships within Greenway and they are: Blackberry, Trout Lake, Grand Rapids Township, Iron Range, Arbo, Lawrence, Greenway, Nashwauk, Lone Pine, Balsam, and Wabana.

There are several community organizations actively working to improve the quality of life in the Greenway area:

  • Greenway Area Business Association
  • The Greenway Foundation
  • Greenway 316 Alumni Association
  • Itasca Economic Development Corporation
  • The Western Mesabi Mine Planning Board

Our History

Each small town and township holds a rich history and culture that makes each a wonderfully unique place to live and an essential element of the Greenway Community. Most of the villages originated in the late 1800's and early 1900's as logging camps, railway stops or mining settlements, and incorporated into towns as the iron mining industry prospered. In rural townships farming was a way of life for many.

Hardworking immigrants comprised the vast majority of the mining labor force, and their ethnic customs were woven into the fabric of each community. From the Serbian Sisters to the Sons of Norway, cultural traditions remain dear to the heart of the Greenway Community.

Education has always been a high priority for Greenway citizens. For most of the 20th century every town boasted at least an elementary school, and today, the school district is one of the area's major employers. The first community college in Itasca County began in Coleraine, on the site of the current Greenway Senior High School. The Greenway School District is named after John C. Greenway, who rode with President Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders, and founded the city of Coleraine.

The Greenway Community holds many distinctions. In May 1909, the city of Marble was named "the world's second richest town". The city of Calumet, whose name means, "Pipe of Peace", is the gateway to the Hill Annex Mine, and Bovey is home of the world famous "Picture Grace". The 1905 National Ski Jumping   Championships were held at Coleraine's Mount Itasca, and    between Taconite and Calumet is the picturesque Scenic Highway.

Today, Greenway's abundant lakes and rivers, natural beauty, and prolific wildlife make it an ideal destination place. Its trails, golf courses, parks, and lakeshores entertain both vacationer and resident. The towns of Greenway are a stunning collection of precious gems that create a priceless, vibrant, irreplaceable community.
